Here the setting is a military post at the Château d'Eau, a landmark on the boulevards of Paris, during the fighting of February 24, 1848. That day's clashes helped bring down the July Monarchy, and Louis-Philippe abdicated before the day ended. Nathaniel Currier, a New York printmaker, issued the lithograph within weeks, so it shows how quickly American publishers turned European upheaval into images for a public eager for news. The hand coloring adds to its value as an early record of how the revolution was reported across the Atlantic.
