Privat-Livemont's 1896 poster for Absinthe Robette was printed in Brussels by J.L. Goffaft and shows the flowing line and flat, saturated color of Belgian Art Nouveau. Henri Privat-Livemont was one of the leading poster designers of the 1890s, and his work helped turn commercial advertising into a recognized art form. Absinthe was heavily promoted across Belgium and France at the time, and the poster reflects how liqueur makers used striking graphic design to win customers in crowded cafés and street displays. Its later history is also notable, since Belgium banned absinthe in 1905.
