Titled as a tribute to Rembrandt, this 1985 color monotype takes his self-portraits as its starting point, a theme he returned to throughout his career in paintings and etchings. The monotype process, in which an image is painted onto a plate and printed as a single impression, gives the work a softer, more painterly surface than etching, which suits the idea of a face revisited again and again. Its place among the 1980s self-portraits reflects how many artists of that decade looked back to older masters to explore identity and the act of looking at oneself.
