Mabel Dwight's 1932 self-portrait lithograph is a direct, unflattering look at the artist herself, signed in pencil and held today in the Library of Congress. Dwight, born in 1876, became known in the 1930s for sharp, satirical lithographs of city life, courtrooms, and crowded streets, work that fit the decade's interest in observing ordinary American life. Lithography was enjoying a revival in the United States at the time, and a self-portrait in stone shows how much a printmaker's own hand and attention shaped the finished image.
