Salmon Brook, in Granby, Connecticut, is the particular place this print shows: a quiet stretch of water in the hill country of the state's north-central region, pictured in early autumn. The design is credited to A. D. Shattuck, and Currier & Ives issued it as a color lithograph in New York in 1869, when the firm was producing large numbers of American landscapes for a broad home market. Prints like this gave families an affordable picture of rural scenery to hang on the wall. The firm's catalog raisonné, compiled by Gale Research, lists it as number 1786.
