A London printer, J.S. Virtue & Co., produced this color lithograph to announce a collection of Pre-Raphaelite works at the Goupil Gallery in 1897. The Goupil was a London exhibition space associated with the French dealing firm Goupil & Cie, and it showed contemporary painting in the 1890s, so a gathering of Pre-Raphaelite work offered a look back at the movement. The Brotherhood had formed in 1848 around Rossetti, Millais and Hunt, and by the late 1890s its work was being shown and reassessed. The poster carries the artist's monogram, a small mark worth noticing in its lower corner.
