Numbered fourth in its series, this chromolithograph shows a group of women bathing, a subject that appealed to late nineteenth-century buyers who wanted affordable color images for the home. Chicago publisher Kurz & Allison produced it around 1886, and the copyright entry in the record shows it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which was a common step for commercial art of the period. Chromolithography built up a picture from many separate stone or plate impressions, each carrying one color, so the soft tints and layered shading are worth looking at closely. The Library of Congress holds the impression, which makes it a useful example of how mass-market color printing shaped popular taste.
