Few subjects in the Caribbean landscape were as dramatic as a storm breaking over the hills, and this watercolor makes that moment its center. It dates from between 1808 and 1816, when Jamaica was a British colony built on sugar and enslaved labor, and when European residents and visitors often recorded the island's scenery and weather. The Library of Congress holds it among its watercolor landscapes from 1800 to 1820, a group that shows how artists of the period treated tropical weather as both a dramatic spectacle and a subject for close observation.
