Set on the Champs-Élysées, the Palais de Glace was one of Paris's best-known ice rinks, and this poster advertises it. Jules Chéret, often called the father of the modern color poster, designed the lithograph, which was printed by Chaix in 1893. His bright palette and lively figures turned advertising into street entertainment, and his posters were pasted across the city for passersby to admire as well as read. Ice skating was then a fashionable new pastime, and the image conveys that sense of elegant leisure.
