Fritz Eichenberg's wood engraving takes its subject from Emily Brontë's 1847 novel, and the record's subject headings point to Heathcliff himself, the brooding outsider whose cruelty and anguish drive the book. Eichenberg, a German-born artist who settled in the United States, became known for illustrating classic novels with stark black-and-white woodcut and wood engraving work. Dating from around 1943, the print belongs to a period when American publishers commissioned such illustrated editions, and its heavy contrasts of light and shadow convey the emotional distress the novel's moors and characters are known for.
