Few of Vuillard's prints use color as boldly as this lithograph, which is catalogued by Claude Roger-Marx as the second state, a reworked impression that shows the artist revisiting his stone or plate. Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) was a member of the Nabis, a group of Paris painters who favored flattened forms, decorative pattern and everyday city life. The record does not give a date, but Vuillard made most of his lithographs in the 1890s, when he was turning the streets and interiors of Paris into compositions of muted, layered color. The print entered the Library of Congress through the Pennell Fund.
