Vuillard's *La partie de dames* (*The Checkers Game*) is a color lithograph in which a board game becomes a quiet study of two people absorbed in play inside a domestic interior. The record gives no date, but the print is listed as Roger-Marx 32 in its third state, and the subject fits the intimate interiors Vuillard made in the 1890s while associated with the Nabis. He often drew scenes of home life with his mother and sister as models, and his flat areas of color and close tonal harmonies make the game feel as much about pattern and atmosphere as about the players.
