A nude man with arms and legs spread, inscribed within both a circle and a square, is the defining image in this 1949 facsimile of Leonardo da Vinci's drawing. Leonardo made the original pen-and-ink study around 1490, pairing the figure with notes drawn from Vitruvius, the Roman architect who described ideal human proportions. This reproduction is Tavola XVIII in Ludwig Heinrich Heydenreich's 1949 study of Leonardo's drawings, published in Florence, which helped bring the sheet to a wider audience. The figure remains a touchstone for discussions of Renaissance anatomy and the meeting of art and mathematics.
