Ravenna's mosaics are the focus of this color lithograph poster, and they explain the city's appeal: its churches preserve some of the finest surviving early Christian and Byzantine work in Western Europe, made when Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire and later a Byzantine stronghold. Printed in Bologna by D.E. Chappius sometime between 1920 and 1930, the poster belongs to the wave of travel advertising Italian cities produced in the years after the First World War, when they competed for visitors. The record credits the design to Ballerio, but beyond that name, little is known about its maker.
