The title credits the work to Raphael, the Italian High Renaissance painter whose Madonnas, made mostly in Florence and Rome in the early 1500s, became some of the most influential religious images in Western art. He arranged the Virgin and Child in calm, balanced groupings, often set against gentle landscapes, and that model shaped devotional painting for centuries. His compositions were widely engraved and reproduced, so many people have come to know these scenes through prints and copies rather than the original panels. The clear, harmonious placement of the figures is worth noticing, since it gives the subject an intimacy that departs from older, more rigid formats.
