The title points to the nickel, and the subject is William H. Woodin, the industrialist Franklin Roosevelt appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1933. That year the Treasury stood at the center of New Deal efforts to steady the currency and banks, so a caricature of its head drew on a public moment. The piece is a carving rather than a drawing, which sets it apart from the ink caricatures Al Hirschfeld became known for. The Library of Congress lists it among works shown in its 2000 to 2001 exhibition of Hirschfeld's work, and the carving's exaggerated features show the same wit about public figures.
