Few holiday magazine posters of the period carry a Dutch theme like this one. The caption card links it to the Netherlands, tobacco, and wooden shoes, though those tracings are old and unverified. Edward Penfield, who lived from 1866 to 1925, was among the most influential American poster designers of his era, and he built his images from flat, bold areas of color that could be read quickly from a distance. The poster advertised the Christmas number of *Scribner's*, and its boast of work "for all readers" reflects the general-interest magazine market of the time.
