Few magazine posters of the 1890s capture the bicycle craze as directly as this one, which promotes the June 1895 issue of *Scribner's Magazine* with a woman riding a bicycle. Charles Dana Gibson, who later became famous for his Gibson Girl illustrations, made the design. By the mid-1890s the bicycle had become a symbol of new freedoms for women, who rode in growing numbers and in clothing far less restrictive than before. Posters like this one were meant for newsstands and shop windows, where a bold figure and a few words could sell an issue at a glance.
