Women and flowers are the two subjects this color poster puts front and center, and it was made to announce the June 1896 issue of *The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine*. The poster is credited to Louis John Rhead (1857-1926), an English-born illustrator who settled in the United States and worked on posters and magazine art during the decade's boom in color printing. The Century Company of New York published the magazine, which was among the leading general-interest monthly periodicals of its day. Posters like this one show how publishers used flat areas of color and graceful figures, drawn from the Art Nouveau style then spreading across Europe, to catch the eye of buyers at newsstands and bookstores.
