Arthur Wesley Dow, the painter, printmaker, and later influential design teacher, made this 1896 poster for *The Lotos*, a monthly magazine of literature and art. Dow's work was shaped by his interest in Japanese prints, and that influence is central to his reputation among artists of the period. The Cycle Publishing Co. of New York issued the poster to promote the magazine to readers interested in literary and artistic culture. Some details in the record come from older caption-card data and have not been independently verified.
