Ethel Reed's color poster for *The New Illustrated Magazine* is a promotional piece, and its record dates it only loosely to the 1890s, based on an old caption card that has not been verified. Reed worked during the decade when American publishers began using large lithographed posters to catch the eye of people on city streets and in shop windows. Such work often drew on flat color, bold outlines and decorative composition from Japanese prints and the emerging Art Nouveau style. Its purpose was simple: to make a magazine's name readable at a glance.
