A poster promoting *The Hour Illustrated* under the slogan "the public share in the profits" makes an unusual pitch for a periodical, inviting readers to see themselves as stakeholders. The design is by J. & W. Beggarstaff, the London partnership of James Pryde and William Nicholson, who in the mid-1890s built their reputation on flat, bold shapes and simplified color. Their posters borrowed from the compositional clarity of Japanese woodblock prints and helped establish the advertising poster as a serious art form in Britain. The 1894 to 1895 date comes from an older caption card, so treat it as approximate.
