Edward Penfield's poster advertised the opening installment of a serialized Joan of Arc story in Harper's Magazine, the publication that frequently announced its new fiction and features with bold color lithographs like this one. Printed by Harper & Brothers in New York in April 1895, it is a sharp example of the American magazine poster of the 1890s, when illustrators such as Penfield used flat areas of color, strong silhouettes, and minimal text to catch the eye on city walls and in shop windows. Joan of Arc, the fifteenth-century French peasant who led armies against English forces before her execution at age 19, was a popular subject in the period, and the poster shows how publishers marketed history as romance.
