Few posters of the 1890s show a publisher's ambitions as plainly as this color lithograph for Harper & Brothers' *Pastime Stories* by Thomas Nelson Page, a Virginia writer known for tales of the post-Civil War South. Edward Penfield, who designed many of the book and magazine posters Harper's issued in this decade, worked in a flat, bold style built on strong color blocks and simple shapes. The catalog subject heading lists African Americans, a reminder that Page's fiction often portrayed Black characters through the nostalgic, dialect-heavy conventions of plantation writing, which modern readers tend to view critically.
