This lithographed title page announces a gallery of Dickens's characters rather than a single scene, presented as original watercolor sketches by the artist identified only as "Kyd." Kyd was the pen name of the illustrator Joseph Clayton Clarke, and the London publisher Raphael Tuck & Sons issued the collection around 1899, nearly three decades after Dickens's death in 1870. Such character albums were popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian years, when Dickens's figures had become household names. The page is worth a look for its ornamental lettering and its framing of the book as a showcase for the novelist's people.
