Mr. Weller Senior, the elderly coachman and father of Sam Weller, is a comic figure from Dickens's *Pickwick Papers*, serialized in 1836 and 1837, and this print shows him as the character the novel made famous. Kyd, the pseudonym of illustrator Joseph Clayton Clarke, drew him for *The Characters of Charles Dickens*, a series of color sketches that Raphael Tuck & Sons reproduced as lithographs in London around 1899. The series reflects the late Victorian appetite for Dickens, whose comic types were then widely reproduced as popular art. Note how the artist plays up Weller's rough, sociable character and his folksy sayings, which Dickens made a trademark of the book.
