Wilkins Micawber, the cheerful, perpetually broke debtor from Dickens's *David Copperfield*, is the figure here, and his optimism is the point of the portrait. Dickens serialized the novel in 1849 and 1850, and Micawber's habit of waiting for "something to turn up" made him one of the author's most quoted comic creations. This color lithograph comes from a set of Dickens character studies drawn by the illustrator who signed himself Kyd and issued in London by Raphael Tuck & Sons around 1899. The set shows how late-Victorian readers pictured Dickens's characters.
