Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle in Charles Dickens's *Oliver Twist*, is the subject here, a pompous minor official who guards his small authority with great seriousness. Dickens first published the novel in serial form in the late 1830s, and Bumble became one of its most recognizable comic figures. This color lithograph was issued by the London firm Raphael Tuck & Sons around 1899, when it was producing many sets of Dickens character images. It was made after original watercolor sketches by the artist known as Kyd, and it reflects the late-Victorian taste for collecting portraits of Dickens's characters.
