Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, appears here in a three-quarter length pose beside a window, turned to his left, in a stereograph dated around 1907. The image was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for mass-producing stereoscopic views that people viewed through hand-held stereo viewers in parlors across the country. By this period Twain was among the most recognizable American writers, and his white suit and untamed hair had become part of his public image. Stereographs like this one were a popular way for readers to feel close to famous figures.
