This oil portrait by Percy Ives, dated April 6, 1882, shows Walt Whitman in a head-and-shoulders view, turned slightly to the left. At the time, Whitman was living in Camden, New Jersey, where he had settled after a stroke in 1873, and he was known as the author of the ever-expanding *Leaves of Grass*, which had drawn both admiration and controversy. The reverse of the canvas bears an inscription naming a different work, *Woman Standing by Flowering Tree*, which hints at how the painting was catalogued alongside other pieces in the Feinberg-Whitman Collection.
