Whitman sits three-quarter length, turned to the right and wearing a hat, in this platinum print by George C. Cox, made around 1887. By then the poet was living in Camden, New Jersey, where he had settled after a stroke in 1873 left him partly paralyzed, and his portraits circulated widely as a companion to his *Leaves of Grass*. Platinum prints were prized for their soft tonal range and permanence, qualities that suit a portrait meant to show the aging writer with dignity. The record suggests the photograph was likely deposited for copyright, a detail that helps date it and shows how such images entered the public record.
