Mark Twain leans at the end of a billiard table in this half-length portrait, a pairing that reflects one of his best-known pastimes. He was a devoted player who kept a table in his New York home and often spent evenings over the game, and the photograph's January 1908 date places it in the last decade of his life, when he was becoming a fixture of American public life. The image is a stereograph, a paired-lens card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, and it was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that produced and sold such views to a wide audience. Its popularity shows how eagerly the public followed the writer's image.
