Dated December 11, 1954, this gelatin silver portrait shows William Faulkner late in his career, when he was among the most celebrated American writers. It belongs to the celebrity series of Carl Van Vechten, the writer and photographer who photographed many of the literary and artistic figures of his day, and the print carries Van Vechten's own numbering. Faulkner had won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949, and in 1954 he published *A Fable*, which later won a Pulitzer Prize. The Library of Congress received the collection as a gift from Van Vechten's estate in 1966.
