Julia Neilson appears here in a head-and-shoulders study connected to a scene from Shakespeare's *As You Like It*, a comedy whose heroine, Rosalind, spends much of the play disguised as a young man in the Forest of Arden. Neilson was a prominent English stage actress of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, known for Shakespearean and romantic roles. The record describes three watercolor paintings, shown here as a color copy of an album page dated 1896. Painted theatrical portraits like these were popular with theatergoers who wanted a lasting memento of a favorite performer.
