This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Emily Dickinson turned to the right, rendered as a lithograph and used as the frontispiece to *The Letters of Emily Dickinson* in 1894. The book appeared eight years after her death in Amherst, Massachusetts, when the public was just beginning to learn her poetry, which had been published only in small selections. Few portraits of Dickinson exist, so a printed likeness like this one carried real weight for readers encountering her for the first time. Its role as a frontispiece placed the author's face at the threshold of her letters, shaping how early readers pictured the woman behind the verse.
