Harper & Brothers promoted Mark Twain's *Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc* with a poster that set this book apart from his comic travel writing and tall tales. Published in 1896, the novel is narrated by a fictional young page who serves Joan of Arc, and Twain regarded it as his most serious literary work. He spent years researching the fifteenth-century campaigns and trial, and he took unusual pride in the result.
