Drawn from memory rather than from a live sitting, this caricature of Charles Dickens dates to 1870, the year the novelist died. The sketch is the work of "Spy," the pen name of Leslie Ward, whose Vanity Fair caricatures made him one of the best-known portrait satirists of the Victorian era. This 1900 photomechanical print reproduces the drawing in Seymour Eaton's *Charles Dickens Rare Print Collection*, published in Philadelphia by R.G. Kennedy & Co., and it shows how Dickens's likeness was circulated to readers long after the original was made.
