Noah Webster's first dictionary was printed in 1806 under the modest title A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, and this title page announces it as a shorter, portable companion to the larger work he was already planning. Webster, a Connecticut-born schoolmaster and lexicographer, wanted an American standard for spelling and usage that would stand apart from British authority, and his later spellings such as "color" and "center" trace back to this stage of that project. The engraved or printed page gives a clear sense of how early American publishers presented reference books to buyers.
