A color lithograph advertising *Perlycross*, a novel by the English writer R. D. Blackmore, this poster was issued by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1894 and is signed by the illustrator Edward Penfield. Blackmore, best known for *Lorna Doone*, wrote a story whose subject is the clergy, which the catalog records as the poster's main theme. Penfield was one of the most prominent American poster designers of the 1890s, and his bold, flat color and simplified shapes helped make publisher posters a recognized art form. The piece shows how advertising for books was turning into graphic design during that decade.
