Edward Penfield's color poster for Harper's, issued as a Christmas promotion, shows a holiday toast rendered in the flat, bold style he brought to American magazine advertising in the 1890s. Penfield (1866-1925) was among the first American illustrators to treat the poster as a serious art form, and his work for Harper's helped establish the magazine's image as a sophisticated family periodical. The record is thin and its dating is unverified, so the piece is best understood as one of the posters that helped turn magazine advertising into a distinct graphic genre at the close of the nineteenth century.
