A shop window full of Walt Whitman books and keepsakes at the Old Corner Book Store in Boston makes this picture unusual among views of the poet's afterlife. The store, on Washington Street, had long been a gathering place for Boston's literary circle, and Emerson, Hawthorne, and Longfellow were among the writers who spent time there. The display dates from the late 1890s, several years after Whitman's death in 1892, when his reputation was growing and his admirers were keeping his memory alive. The mounted cabinet card, a popular format of the period, was made by a Boston photographer working on Tremont Street.
