The particular thing about this poster is its message: it is a summer recruitment notice for a vacation reading club run through a public library, aimed at getting people, especially children, to keep reading while school was out. Its subject tags place it in Iowa during the 1930s, and it was produced under the Federal Art Project, one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration, which hired artists to make posters for public agencies and community programs. Silkscreen was a method the WPA poster units used because it allowed bold flat color and cheap runs of many copies. The record gives a date of 1936 for the design, while a stamp on the back reads May 25, 1939, which suggests it was still being circulated or filed years later.
