Few posters from the Depression era speak as directly to readers as this one, which invites Chicagoans to make the public library's acquisitions part of their week. Issued in 1936 as a silkscreen print, it promoted Public Library Week, held November 12 through 18, under a proclamation from Mayor Edward J. Kelly. The poster was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists to create public-information art during the 1930s. Its message reflects a period when libraries drew heavy use from people seeking free reading and self-education.
