Chicago residents could get a syphilis blood test free of charge and in confidence, and this poster advertises that offer for the city's Board of Health. Made under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, it uses silkscreen, a method the program favored because it could produce bold, inexpensive runs of color. Public health campaigns of the 1930s often struggled with shame around venereal disease, so the promise of privacy was central to persuading people to come in for testing and treatment.
