Few WPA posters speak as bluntly as this silkscreen, which confronts the viewer with the question "Whom have you exposed to syphilis?" Sponsored by the New York City Department of Correction, it tells readers to see their physician and to have anyone they may have exposed examined, a direct appeal at a time when venereal disease was often kept quiet out of embarrassment. The Federal Art Project produced many public health posters in the late 1930s, using flat, bold color and short slogans to reach city residents who might never read a pamphlet. A June 1939 date stamp on the back helps place it in that campaign.
