This WPA silkscreen poster carries a blunt public health warning: syphilis can lead to heart trouble, blindness, deafness and mental disorders, and the remedy is a simple blood test. It was produced under the Works Progress Administration's federal arts program, which employed artists during the Depression and turned out posters on health, safety and civic themes. The record credits New York City's Department of Correction as sponsor, a reminder that city agencies used these posters to reach the public about venereal disease screening. Its 1936 date places it in a decade when testing and treatment for syphilis were being pushed hard in American cities.
