Nurse the baby" is the blunt instruction at the center of this 1936 silkscreen, and its line "Your protection against trouble" presents breastfeeding as a safeguard for a child's health. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced many public health posters like it during the Depression, turning medical advice into bold, flat images that could be taken in at a glance in a clinic or on a street. A 1938 date stamped on the back shows the print was still in use or in files two years later.
