Its blunt title, "Your blood is bad means you have syphilis," sets it apart from the broader health posters of the period. The silkscreen was produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project and sponsored by New York's Department of Correction, a reminder that public health messaging reached institutions as well as streets. In the 1930s, syphilis was a serious and widely discussed public health problem, and blood testing was the main way to detect it. The poster's plain warning about transmission through sexual contact reflects a period when officials increasingly spoke about the disease openly, even as many people still avoided the subject.
