This WPA silkscreen poster takes a pointed public-health message and puts it in front of New Yorkers in a few blunt words: syphilis passed from mother to child can damage a baby's eyesight, but early consultation can prevent much of that harm. Dated 1936, it was produced under the Works Progress Administration's federal arts program and sponsored by the New York City Department of Correction, a reminder of how public health outreach in the 1930s often ran through many agencies at once. Congenital syphilis was a serious concern in that decade, and the poster's stark claim that half of affected babies suffered impaired sight reflects the period's push to encourage prenatal testing and treatment.
