Printed in silkscreen in 1936 under the Federal Art Project, this poster states its message plainly: syphilis is dangerous, but it can be cured. It reflects New York State's public health campaigns of the Depression era, when venereal disease carried heavy stigma and public clinics offered testing and treatment. Before penicillin became the standard cure in the 1940s, treatment was long and uncertain, so a message of curability was itself a public health argument. A date stamp of May 14, 1941, on the back shows the poster was still in circulation years after it was made.
